Cabinets set the look of a kitchen more than anything else in it. When the cabinet boxes are solid and the layout works, refacing changes that look without taking the kitchen apart.

Refacing keeps your existing cabinet boxes and layout and replaces what you see and touch: the doors, the drawer fronts, and the finish on the cabinet frames and end panels, usually along with the hinges and pulls.

Collaborative Construction offers cabinet refacing and new cabinet installation as part of kitchen remodeling in Fort Myers and across Southwest Florida. Because we do both, we can look at your cabinets with you and talk through which one suits your kitchen, your goals, and your budget.

The work

What cabinet refacing includes

Built-in bar wall with blue shaker cabinets, glass-front upper cabinets, dark floating shelves, a white herringbone tile backsplash, a small sink with a brass faucet and an under-counter wine fridge

New doors and drawer fronts

This is the biggest visual change. You choose the style, from shaker to flat-panel, and the color or wood tone.

Frames and end panels to match

The face frames and exposed sides of the existing boxes are covered or finished to match the new doors, so the cabinets look consistent from every angle.

Hinges, pulls, and drawers

New hinges and hardware go on with the new doors. Worn drawer boxes and slides can be replaced at the same time.

Additions where they help

Refacing can be combined with a few new cabinets: an extra bank of drawers, an island, or cabinetry taken up to the ceiling. The new pieces are finished to match the refaced ones.

Countertops and backsplash

Refacing pairs well with new quartz or granite countertops and a custom backsplash. Countertops sit on the cabinet boxes, so if you plan to replace them, it makes sense to plan both together.

Planning

Reface or replace?

Refacing is the right answer for some kitchens and the wrong one for others. These are the things that decide it.

When refacing fits

The boxes are sturdy, the layout suits the way you cook, and what you want is a different style, color, or finish.

When new cabinets are the better investment

You want to change the layout, add storage the current boxes cannot hold, or the boxes themselves are worn. New cabinetry also makes sense in a full remodel that reconfigures the floor plan.

Look under the sink first

Slow leaks and humidity do their damage inside the cabinet, where it is easy to miss. A box that has swollen or softened should be replaced rather than refaced. One or two boxes can be replaced while the rest are refaced.

Humidity and salt air

Southwest Florida is hard on cabinets, especially near the water. Door construction, finishes, and hardware that tolerate moisture are worth weighing alongside looks.

Permits

Rules for cabinet work differ from one building department to the next. The City of Naples requires a permit to replace kitchen cabinetry, while Charlotte County does not for cabinet work outside a flood zone that keeps the same layout. Ask before work starts.

Condominiums

Condominium associations may want notice or approval before any interior work, refacing included.

Cabinet refacing questions

01

What is the difference between refacing and replacing cabinets?

Refacing keeps the existing cabinet boxes and layout and changes the doors, drawer fronts, and finish. Replacing removes the cabinets and installs new ones, which makes sense if you want to change the layout, add storage features, or the boxes are worn.

02

How do I know if my cabinets can be refaced?

The boxes need to be solid: square, dry, and firmly attached, with no swelling or water damage. We can look at your cabinets during a free estimate and talk through which option suits your goals and budget.

03

Can I change my kitchen layout if I reface the cabinets?

Not much. Refacing works with the cabinets where they are, though a few new cabinets can be added. If the layout is the problem, a full kitchen remodel lets us reconfigure the floor plan to improve flow, storage, and functionality.

04

Should I replace my countertops at the same time?

If new countertops are part of your plans, it is worth doing both in one project. Countertops and backsplashes are among the partial kitchen updates we offer, with quartz, granite, and custom backsplash installations.

05

What does cabinet refacing cost?

It depends on the number of doors and drawers, the door style and material you choose, and whether any boxes, drawers, or hardware need replacing. No two homes are the same, so we don’t publish prices. Every project starts with a free, no-obligation on-site estimate, and we offer financing options you can ask about during it.

06
