In short

The box matters more than the door.

Humidity is the quiet test every Southwest Florida kitchen has to pass. Cabinets here live with damp air whenever the doors and windows are open, salt in the air near the water, and the occasional slow leak under the sink. Some materials shrug that off. Others swell, peel, or come apart at the seams.

This is what to look at when you choose new cabinets, or when you decide whether the ones you have are worth refacing.

Key points

  • Plywood cabinet boxes tolerate moisture better than particleboard.
  • A painted door with a stable center panel is less likely to crack at the joints.
  • Thermofoil can loosen near heat.
  • Near the water, ask what the hinges and drawer slides are made of.
  • Air conditioning and a range hood protect cabinets as much as the materials do.

Construction

Start with the cabinet box

The box is the sides, bottom, and back of the cabinet. It carries the weight of the countertop, and it is the part that meets water first, at the sink base and beside the dishwasher.

Plywood is made of thin layers of wood glued with the grain running in alternating directions. It holds screws well, and when it gets wet it tends to dry out and stay in one piece.

Particleboard, sometimes called furniture board, is wood particles bound with resin. It is flat, consistent, and economical. Its weakness is the edge: when an exposed edge takes on water, it swells and does not return to shape. Medium-density fiberboard, or MDF, is denser and smoother and behaves the same way at a raw edge.

If the budget allows one upgrade, put it into the boxes, and above all into the sink base.

What you see

Doors and drawer fronts

Solid wood

Wood expands and contracts as humidity changes. On a painted five-piece door that movement can show as a hairline crack in the paint where the frame meets the panel. It is cosmetic, and a stained finish hides it.

MDF for painted doors

A painted door with an MDF center panel, or one cut from a single piece, stays stable, so the paint stays intact. This is why many painted shaker doors are not solid wood throughout, and it is a sound choice, not a shortcut.

Thermofoil

A vinyl film bonded to MDF. It is smooth and easy to clean. The film can loosen with heat, so it needs care beside ovens, dishwashers, and toasters.

Laminate and textured melamine

Durable and moisture-resistant on the face. As with anything built on a board core, the edges are the weak point, so the quality of the edge banding matters.

The details

Finish and hardware

A finish applied and cured in a factory is generally harder and more moisture-resistant than paint brushed on in the kitchen. If you are comparing painted cabinets, ask how the finish is applied.

Hinges and drawer slides are steel, and steel rusts. In a home on a canal or near the Gulf, ask what the hardware is made of and how it is coated. It is a small part of the kitchen that you touch every day.

The house

What your home does to its cabinets

Materials are half the story. A home that stays closed and air conditioned through the summer keeps indoor humidity down, and its cabinets see far less stress than those in a house left open to the breeze.

If the house sits empty for months, ask your air conditioning contractor how to control humidity while you are away. A range hood that vents outdoors takes cooking steam out of the room. And a look under the sink a few times a year catches a slow leak before the cabinet floor swells.

Refacing

If you are thinking about refacing

Refacing keeps your existing cabinet boxes and replaces the doors, drawer fronts, and finish. That makes the condition of the boxes the deciding question. Solid, dry boxes are good candidates. A box that has swollen or softened should be replaced, and one or two boxes can be replaced while the rest are refaced.

Collaborative Construction offers both cabinet refacing and new cabinet installation, and we work closely with you on material selections. We look at this during a free on-site estimate.

Good to know

Common questions

01

Is plywood or particleboard better for kitchen cabinets in Florida?

Plywood tolerates moisture better. When particleboard takes on water at an exposed edge it swells and does not recover, which matters most at the sink base and beside the dishwasher. Particleboard that stays dry performs well, so the quality of the edges and the plumbing around it count too.

02

Do painted cabinets crack in Florida humidity?

Painted solid-wood doors can show hairline cracks where the frame meets the center panel, because wood moves as humidity changes. A painted door with an MDF center panel is more stable, and steady indoor humidity reduces the movement.

03

Are solid wood cabinets a bad idea in Florida?

No. Solid wood is durable and can be refinished. It moves with humidity, so it suits a home with steady air conditioning, and a stained finish shows that movement less than paint does.
